Weathering Steels
Commonly referred by the trade mark name Cor-Ten, weathering steels are a group of carbon steels designed to resist corrosion by forming a protective oxide layer(Rust) . These grades of steel have enhanced weather resistance compared to traditional steel plate and are widely recognized for their aesthetic appeal.
Weathering steel products are distinctive and easily recognized by the patina that develops through oxidization of the surface layer of the steel through exposure to the elements.
The patina is the result of the complex protective oxide layer that forms on the steel plate’s surface. It is this oxide layer that produces a distinctive appearance and contributes to the material’s enhanced corrosion resistance capabilities compared to standard steels.
The improved corrosion performance may lead to improved service life and can provide a cost advantage over other materials.
Commonly used in the art and architectural fields weathering steels can also be found in rolling stock, shipping containers and bridges
